Studying Abroad from Nepal: What Every Student Should Know Before They Start

The decision to study abroad is not just about leaving Nepal -- it is about building a path toward a career and life that would not be possible otherwise. Every year, more than 112,000 Nepali students receive No Objection Certificates to study overseas, and behind that number is an enormous diversity of experiences. Some students thrive from the very first semester. Others struggle because they were not prepared for what the process actually involves.

The difference between these outcomes almost always comes down to preparation. Not just IELTS preparation or visa preparation, but an honest understanding of what studying abroad demands: financially, academically, emotionally, and practically. The students who succeed are the ones who walk in with realistic expectations, a solid plan, and the willingness to adapt when things do not go exactly as expected.

The 5 Things We Wish Every Nepali Student Knew Before Starting

After guiding over 1,500 students since 2007, these are the 5 most important truths we share with every student who walks through our doors:

  1. 1. The process takes longer than you think. From the moment you decide to study abroad to the day you board your flight, expect 8 to 14 months. If you are aiming for a September 2027 intake, you should be starting your preparation in early 2026. This includes English test preparation (2-3 months), university applications (1-2 months), offer letters (2-8 weeks), financial documentation (1-2 months), and visa processing (3-16 weeks depending on the country).
  2. 2. Your English score is more important than you realize. Many students treat the English test as a formality. It is not. Your score directly determines which universities will consider your application, which scholarships you qualify for, and how strong your visa application appears. A student with IELTS 7.0 has meaningfully more options than one with 6.0. Invest in proper preparation -- it pays for itself many times over.
  3. 3. Financial planning is not just about showing bank balance. Visa officers are trained to identify last-minute fund arrangements. Your financial documents need to tell a consistent, credible story: stable income sources, gradual savings growth, and a clear ability to fund education without undue hardship. Read our financial documents guide for details.
  4. 4. Choosing the right country matters as much as choosing the right university. Each country has fundamentally different work rights, visa policies, PR pathways, and cost structures. A student who wants to settle permanently should be looking at Canada or Australia. A student focused on academic prestige and research should consider the USA. A student on a tight budget with limited time should explore the UK's 1-year master's programs. Use our country comparison tool to make this decision systematically.
  5. 5. Getting the right guidance early saves time, money, and stress. Students who try to navigate the process alone often make avoidable mistakes: applying to wrong universities, preparing for the wrong test, or submitting incomplete visa applications. A single visa rejection can cost lakhs of rupees and months of delay. Professional guidance is not an expense -- it is an investment that protects a much larger investment.
