Study in Japan from Nepal: Emerging Destination (2026)

February 15, 202612 min read

Here is a statistic that surprises many people: Japan is now the number one destination for Nepali students by No Objection Certificate count. In 2023/24, 34,731 NOCs were issued for Japan — more than Canada (15,982), Australia (14,372), or the UK (13,339). Japan has more Nepali students heading to it than any other country in the world.

Yet when most Nepali families think about studying abroad, they think about the USA, Australia, Canada, or the UK. Japan is still considered an "emerging" destination in many conversations — even though the numbers tell a different story. This guide explores why Japan has become so popular, what the costs and programs look like, and how you can plan your own journey there.

Why Nepali Students Are Choosing Japan

Several factors are driving the surge of Nepali students to Japan:

Affordability. Japan is significantly more affordable than the traditional English-speaking destinations. Tuition at Japanese language schools and even universities is a fraction of what you would pay in the USA or Australia.

Part-time work rights. Japan allows international students to work 28 hours per week during the academic term and up to 40 hours per week during school holidays. With hourly rates starting at approximately JPY 1,000-1,200 (approximately NPR 900-1,100), part-time work can cover a significant portion of your living expenses.

Cultural appeal. Japanese culture — from technology and animation to food and architecture — holds strong appeal for younger Nepali students. The cultural experience of living in Japan is unique and distinct from Western countries.

Pathway to skilled employment. Japan is facing a significant demographic challenge with an aging population and declining workforce. The Japanese government has been creating pathways for international workers, and studying in Japan positions you for career opportunities that may not exist in other countries.

Types of Programs Available in Japan

Program TypeDurationLanguageAnnual Tuition (Approx.)
Japanese Language School1-2 yearsJapaneseJPY 600,000-900,000 (~NPR 5.4-8.1 lakh)
Vocational School (Senmon Gakko)2 yearsJapaneseJPY 500,000-1,000,000 (~NPR 4.5-9 lakh)
Undergraduate (Bachelor's)4 yearsJapanese (some English)JPY 500,000-1,500,000 (~NPR 4.5-13.5 lakh)
Graduate (Master's/PhD)2-5 yearsJapanese or EnglishJPY 500,000-1,200,000 (~NPR 4.5-10.8 lakh)

Important reality check: The majority of Nepali students in Japan are enrolled in Japanese language schools and vocational programs, not in top research universities. Language schools serve as an entry point — students learn Japanese and then either transition to higher education or enter the workforce. If you are considering Japan, be realistic about the pathway you are choosing.

Cost of Studying in Japan

Compared to the USA, Australia, Canada, and the UK, Japan is remarkably affordable:

ExpenseAnnual Cost (JPY)Annual Cost (NPR)
Tuition (language school)600,000-900,0005.4-8.1 lakh
Tuition (university)500,000-1,500,0004.5-13.5 lakh
Accommodation360,000-720,0003.2-6.5 lakh
Food300,000-480,0002.7-4.3 lakh
Transportation60,000-120,0000.5-1.1 lakh
Insurance + Other120,000-240,0001.1-2.2 lakh
Total (language school path)1,440,000-2,460,000~13-22 lakh/year

With part-time work at 28 hours per week during term time, a student can earn approximately JPY 1,200,000-1,600,000 per year (NPR 10.8-14.4 lakh), which can offset a substantial portion of living costs.

MEXT Scholarship: Japan's Fully Funded Government Scholarship

The MEXT (Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology) Scholarshipis Japan's most prestigious government scholarship for international students. It covers:

  • Full tuition at a Japanese university
  • Monthly living stipend (approximately JPY 143,000-148,000 per month for graduate students)
  • Round-trip airfare between Nepal and Japan
  • No application fee for MEXT scholars at Japanese universities

MEXT is highly competitive, with limited spots available for Nepali students each year. Applications are processed through the Embassy of Japan in Kathmandu. If you have a strong academic record and are interested in research or graduate studies, MEXT is one of the most valuable fully funded scholarships available.

Japan Student Visa Process from Nepal

The visa process for Japan is different from Western countries. Here is an overview:

Step 1: Choose a program. Select a language school, vocational school, or university in Japan.

Step 2: Apply to the institution. Submit your application, academic documents, and financial evidence to the school in Japan. The school will process your application and apply for a Certificate of Eligibility (CoE) on your behalf.

Step 3: Receive your CoE. The Certificate of Eligibility is issued by the Immigration Services Agency of Japan. This process can take 1-3 months. The CoE is the single most important document in your visa application.

Step 4: Apply for a student visa. With your CoE in hand, apply for a student visa (ryugaku visa) at the Embassy of Japan in Kathmandu. You will need your CoE, passport, visa application form, and photographs.

Step 5: Visa decision. Processing typically takes 5-10 business days at the embassy.

Step 6: Travel to Japan. After receiving your visa, arrange travel, accommodation, and prepare for your new life in Japan.

Japanese Language Requirements

Language is the biggest barrier for Nepali students considering Japan. Unlike the USA, Canada, Australia, or the UK, most programs in Japan are taught in Japanese.

For language schools: No prior Japanese knowledge is required. You will start from zero.

For vocational schools and universities (Japanese-taught): You typically need JLPT N2 or higher (Japanese Language Proficiency Test, Level 2). This usually requires 1-2 years of language school study.

For English-taught programs: A growing number of Japanese universities offer graduate programs in English. These programs require English proficiency (IELTS, TOEFL, or equivalent) instead of Japanese.

The typical Nepali student pathway: Most Nepali students enter Japan through a language school, spend 1-2 years learning Japanese, and then either enroll in a vocational school or university, or transition into the workforce.

Japan is the most affordable option, but the language barrier is real. If you are comfortable learning Japanese and are drawn to Japanese culture and career opportunities, Japan offers an exceptional value proposition. If you need to study and work in English, the traditional 4 destinations remain stronger choices.

Challenges to Be Aware Of

We believe in giving you the full picture, including the challenges:

  • Language barrier: Unlike English-speaking countries, daily life in Japan requires Japanese proficiency. Plan to invest serious time in language study. Shopping, navigating public transport, visiting a doctor, and interacting with landlords all require at least basic Japanese.
  • Cultural adjustment: Japanese work and social culture can be very different from Nepali culture. Punctuality is valued to the minute, communication tends to be indirect, and there is a strong emphasis on hierarchy and formality. These differences are manageable but require patience and willingness to adapt.
  • Limited English-taught programs: While growing, English-taught degree programs are still limited compared to the USA or Australia. Most undergraduate and vocational programs are taught entirely in Japanese.
  • Work-study balance: While generous part-time work rights are a major draw, some students prioritize earning money over their studies. This is a trap. Your education must remain your primary focus. Students who work excessive hours often struggle academically, which can jeopardize their visa status and future career prospects.

Nepali Community in Japan

Nepal is one of the largest source countries for international residents in Japan, with over 150,000 Nepali nationals living in the country. This means strong community support, Nepali restaurants, cultural events during Dashain and Tihar, and a network of seniors who can guide new arrivals. The Nepali community in cities like Tokyo, Osaka, and Fukuoka is vibrant and welcoming.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to know Japanese before going to Japan?

Not if you are enrolling in a language school. Language schools accept students with zero Japanese knowledge. However, for direct university or vocational school enrollment, Japanese proficiency (typically JLPT N2) is usually required.

Can I work while studying in Japan?

Yes. International students can work up to 28 hours per week during term and 40 hours per week during holidays, with a part-time work permission from immigration.

Is Japan cheaper than studying in USA or Australia?

Significantly. Total annual costs in Japan (language school path) are approximately NPR 13-22 lakh, compared to NPR 33-85 lakh for the USA or NPR 35-62 lakh for Australia.

What are the post-study work options in Japan?

Graduates can obtain a Designated Activities visa for job hunting (up to 1year). Japan's aging population creates strong demand for skilled foreign workers, and the government has simplified the process for converting student visas to work visas.
