Study in Netherlands from Nepal: Brief Guide

March 15, 202611 min read

The Netherlands (Holland) is an increasingly popular study destination for Nepali students who want a high-quality European education taught in English, at a fraction of the cost of the UK or USA. With over 2,100 programs taught entirely in English, a strong innovation-driven economy, and a welcoming international culture, the Netherlands offers a compelling alternative to the traditional Big 4 destinations. This guide covers everything Nepali students need to know about studying in the Netherlands.

Why Study in the Netherlands?

The Netherlands consistently ranks among the top 10 countries globally for quality of life, innovation, and education. Dutch universities rank highly in world rankings — 13 Dutch universities appear in the QS World University Rankings top 350. The country is home to global companies like Philips, Shell, ASML, Unilever, and Booking.com, creating strong internship and employment opportunities.

Key advantages for Nepali students: Over 2,100 programs taught in English at bachelor's and master's levels. Lower tuition than UK, USA, or Australia. 95% of Dutch people speak English, making daily life easy without learning Dutch. Post-study work visa (Orientation Year) allows you to stay for 1 year after graduation to find work. Central European location — easy travel to Germany, Belgium, France, and the UK.

Top Universities in the Netherlands

The Netherlands has 2 types of higher education institutions: research universities (universiteiten) and universities of applied sciences (hogescholen). Research universities focus on academic and research-oriented programs, while universities of applied sciences emphasize practical, career-oriented education.

Top research universities: Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) — ranked 47th globally, exceptional for engineering and technology. University of Amsterdam (UvA) — ranked 53rd, strong in social sciences, humanities, and business. Erasmus University Rotterdam — renowned for economics and business (Rotterdam School of Management). Leiden University — the oldest university in the Netherlands, strong in law and social sciences. University of Groningen — comprehensive university with strong research programs. Wageningen University — world number 1 in agriculture and environmental sciences. Eindhoven University of Technology — strong in engineering and design.

Top universities of applied sciences: Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences, The Hague University of Applied Sciences, and Saxion University of Applied Sciences. These institutions offer more affordable tuition and practical programs.

Tuition Fees

Tuition fees for non-EU students (including Nepali students) are set by each institution. Here are typical ranges.

Bachelor's programs: EUR 6,000 to EUR 15,000 per year (NPR 8.5 to 21 lakh per year). Master's programs: EUR 8,000 to EUR 20,000 per year (NPR 11 to 28 lakh per year). Technical/engineering programs: EUR 10,000 to EUR 18,000 per year. MBA programs: EUR 20,000 to EUR 35,000 per year. Universities of applied sciences are generally at the lower end of the tuition range.

Admission Requirements

Bachelor's programs: NEB +2 (or equivalent) with strong grades. Some programs require specific subject prerequisites (math for engineering, biology for life sciences). A 1-year foundation program may be required if your +2 is not considered equivalent to Dutch VWO. Master's programs: 4-year bachelor's degree from a recognized university. Some programs accept 3-year degrees with additional qualifications.

English language: IELTS 6.0 to 6.5 for most programs. TOEFL iBT 80 to 90. Some programs accept Duolingo (105+). Technical programs at TU Delft and Eindhoven require IELTS 6.5 with no band below 6.0.

Application process: Bachelor's applications go through Studielink (studielink.nl), the centralized Dutch application portal. Master's applications are submitted directly to the university. Application deadlines: typically April 1 for September start (some programs have earlier deadlines in January or February). February intake is available at some universities of applied sciences.

Scholarships for Nepali Students

Holland Scholarship: EUR 5,000 one-time grant for non-EU students. Available at many Dutch universities. Apply through the university after receiving admission. Orange Knowledge Programme (Nuffic): Fully funded scholarships for master's programs in development-related fields. Covers tuition, living costs, travel, and insurance. Open to Nepali applicants. Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degrees: EU-funded scholarships covering full tuition plus monthly allowance of EUR 1,400. Highly competitive but fully funded. University-specific scholarships: TU Delft Excellence Scholarships, Amsterdam Merit Scholarships, Leiden University Excellence Scholarships, and others. Amounts range from partial tuition waivers to full tuition plus living stipend.

Visa Process for Nepali Students

Nepali students need an MVV (Machtiging tot Voorlopig Verblijf) entry visa and a residence permit to study in the Netherlands. The process is simpler than it sounds because your university handles most of it.

Step 1: Accept your admission and pay the tuition deposit. Step 2: Your university applies for your MVV and residence permit on your behalf through the IND (Immigration and Naturalisation Service). Step 3: You receive an MVV authorization letter. Take this to the Netherlands Embassy in New Delhi (the nearest for Nepali citizens) to get the MVV sticker in your passport. Step 4: Travel to the Netherlands. Within 2 weeks of arrival, collect your residence permit from the IND desk.

Financial requirement: You must show approximately EUR 12,000 to EUR 14,000 in a blocked account or through a sponsor to prove you can cover living costs for one year.

Cost of Living

The Netherlands is moderately expensive by European standards. Monthly living costs for a student range from EUR 800 to EUR 1,200 depending on the city.

Amsterdam: EUR 1,000 to 1,400 per month (the most expensive). Rotterdam, The Hague, Utrecht: EUR 850 to 1,100 per month. Groningen, Eindhoven, smaller cities: EUR 750 to 950 per month. Accommodation is the biggest expense: student rooms cost EUR 400 to 800per month. Finding accommodation in Amsterdam and other major cities is competitive — start searching early through your university's housing portal.

Work Rights

Non-EU students in the Netherlands can work up to 16 hours per week during the academic year or work full-time during summer months (June, July, August). Your employer must obtain a work permit (TWV) for you. Many students find part-time jobs in hospitality, retail, or as student assistants at their university. Typical hourly wages range from EUR 12 to EUR 16.

Post-Study Work Visa (Orientation Year)

After completing your degree, you can apply for the Orientation Year Visa (Zoekjaar), which allows you to stay in the Netherlands for 1 year to look for work. During this year, you can work without restrictions. If you find a job that meets the Highly Skilled Migrant (Kennismigrant) salary threshold — approximately EUR 3,500 per month for graduates under 30 — your employer can sponsor your work residence permit. The Netherlands also has a points-based system and the 30% ruling, which provides a tax benefit for highly skilled migrants, effectively boosting your take-home pay.

Is the Netherlands Right for You?

The Netherlands is an excellent choice if you want a high-quality English-taught program in Europe at a lower cost than the UK. It works well for students interested in engineering, business, agriculture, social sciences, and technology. If your priority is permanent residency, the pathway is possible but more challenging than in Canada or Australia. If you value an international environment, central European location, and strong career prospects in Europe, the Netherlands deserves serious consideration.
