Study in Netherlands
The Netherlands is one of Europe's most welcoming and affordable English-taught study destinations, home to TU Delft, the University of Amsterdam, and Wageningen — with more than 2,100 fully English-taught programmes, tuition far below the UK or USA, and a one-year Orientation Year (zoekjaar) that lets you work freely after graduation. For Nepali students who want a globally ranked European degree taught entirely in English, the Netherlands is a smart, value-driven choice.

Why Study in Netherlands
Top Reasons to Choose Netherlands
2,100+ English-Taught Programmes
The Netherlands offers more fully English-taught degrees than any other country in continental Europe — over 2,100 bachelor's and master's programmes. You study entirely in English, so you never need Dutch to earn your degree.
Globally Ranked Universities
TU Delft (around 47th worldwide) and the University of Amsterdam (around 53rd) both sit in the global top 100, with nine Dutch universities in the QS top 200. Wageningen is consistently the world's number one for agriculture and life sciences.
Affordable Compared to UK, USA & Ireland
Non-EU tuition typically runs EUR 8,000-22,000 a year — well below comparable English-taught degrees in the UK, USA, or Ireland. Combined with reasonable living costs outside Amsterdam, the Netherlands offers strong value for money.
Orientation Year: 1-Year Stay Back
After graduating, you can apply for the Orientation Year (zoekjaar) residence permit — 12 months to find a job or start a business with no work-permit restriction and no minimum salary requirement during the search.
Holland & University Scholarships
The Holland Scholarship gives EUR 5,000 in your first year, and most universities offer their own merit awards from EUR 3,000 up to full tuition plus living costs for outstanding applicants.
Safe, Central & English-Friendly
The Netherlands is one of the safest countries in Europe, almost everyone speaks fluent English, and its central location means cheap travel across the EU. A growing Nepali and South Asian community makes settling in easier.
Visa Process
MVV + VVR Student Visa Process (TEV Procedure)
Receive an unconditional offer of admission from a recognised Dutch sponsor (university)
Pay the tuition deposit and transfer the required living-cost proof (about EUR 13,570 for one year) so the university can verify your funds
Your university applies for the MVV (entry visa) and VVR (residence permit) together through the IND under the TEV (Entry and Residence) procedure
Submit your passport, admission letter, proof of finances, and birth certificate as requested by the university
Wait for the IND decision — usually within 60 days (up to 90 days in the May-August peak season)
Once approved, collect your MVV sticker at the Dutch embassy or VFS (Nepali applicants are usually directed to the embassy in New Delhi)
Travel to the Netherlands within the MVV validity and collect your residence permit card
Complete the GGD tuberculosis (TB) test within three months of arrival, arranged through your university

During Studies
Nepali students on a Dutch residence permit can work up to 16 hours per week throughout the year, OR full-time during June, July, and August. Your employer must obtain a TWV work permit before you start (there is no fee for you), and you need a BSN (citizen service number). Part-time wages typically run EUR 10-20 per hour.
After Graduation
After graduating you can apply for the Orientation Year (zoekjaar) residence permit — 12 months to look for a job or start a business with no work-permit restriction and no minimum salary requirement during the search. Once you find skilled work, you can switch to a Highly Skilled Migrant permit, which uses a reduced salary threshold (about EUR 3,122 per month gross in 2026) for recent graduates.
Post-Study Visa
Orientation Year (zoekjaar): 12 months. Apply within 3 years of graduating. Reduced Highly Skilled Migrant salary threshold afterwards (~EUR 3,122/month gross in 2026).
