Two Types of Dutch Institutions
- Research universities (WO) — academic, theory-driven degrees focused on research. These include TU Delft, UvA, Utrecht, Leiden, and the others profiled below. Best if you want academic depth, research, or a strong global brand.
- Universities of applied sciences (HBO) — practical, career-focused degrees with internships built in. Often more affordable and ideal if you want job-ready, hands-on training. Examples include Hanze, Saxion, Fontys, and HAN.
Both types are recognised IND sponsors and both lead to the same MVV + VVR student visa and the post-study Orientation Year. Choose based on your goals, not prestige alone.

Delft University of Technology (TU Delft)
The Netherlands' top-ranked university and a global heavyweight in engineering, architecture, aerospace, computer science, and design. If your goal is technology or engineering, TU Delft is the flagship choice — but admission is competitive and English requirements are high.
University of Amsterdam (UvA)
A broad, research-intensive university strong in social sciences, business and economics, data science, communication, humanities, and law. Located in the country's most vibrant (and most expensive) city.
Wageningen University & Research (WUR)
Consistently ranked the world's number one for agriculture and forestry, and a global leader in food science, environmental studies, and life sciences. A standout choice for Nepali students from agricultural and environmental backgrounds.
Utrecht, Leiden & Groningen
Three of the oldest and most respected Dutch research universities, with broad programme catalogues across sciences, humanities, law, and social sciences. Groningen in particular is popular with international students and sits in a more affordable city.
Eindhoven (TU/e) & Erasmus Rotterdam

Intakes and Application Deadlines
- September intake (main): the primary start, with most programmes available. Non-EU deadlines often fall between January and May — apply early.
- February intake (limited): only some programmes; deadlines typically September-October of the previous year.
- Selective bachelor's programmes may have a fixed national deadline (often 15 January via Studielink) — check each programme.
