IELTS for UKVI (SELT): Guide for Nepali Students Applying to UK
If you are applying for a UK Student Route visa, you need to understand a critical distinction that catches many Nepali students off guard: regular IELTS and IELTS for UKVI are not the same thing for visa purposes. Taking the wrong version of the test can delay your visa application by months and cost you thousands of rupees in retake fees.
IELTS for UKVI (UK Visas and Immigration) is a Secure English Language Test (SELT) approved by the UK Home Office for visa applications. While the test content is identical to regular IELTS, the administrative procedures, test center requirements, and reporting formats are different. This guide from Study Abroad from Nepal explains when you need IELTS for UKVI, how it differs from regular IELTS, and how to prepare effectively.
Whether you are applying for a bachelor's, master's, or pre-sessional English course in the UK, this page gives you the clarity you need. For a broader view of studying in the UK, visit our complete UK study guide and the UK Student Route visa guide.
What Is IELTS for UKVI?
IELTS for UKVI is a version of the IELTS test that meets the UK Home Office's requirements for Secure English Language Tests (SELT). The UK government requires that English language test results used for immigration purposes come from tests that meet specific security standards, including identity verification, video recording, and secure test environments.
IELTS for UKVI Academic
Required if you are applying for a UK Student Route visa and your university or college requires a SELT score. This version is used for degree-level courses (undergraduate and postgraduate) and pre-sessional English language courses.
- For Student Route visa applications
- Same content as regular IELTS Academic
- Taken at approved SELT centers only
IELTS Life Skills
A separate, shorter test used for Family Route visa or settlement applications. It only tests Speaking and Listening at CEFR A1 or B1 level. This is not relevant for student visa applications but is worth knowing about for family members who may be accompanying you.
- For Family Route visas
- Speaking and Listening only
- Pass/fail result
IELTS vs IELTS for UKVI: Key Differences
| Feature | Regular IELTS | IELTS for UKVI |
|---|---|---|
| Test Content | Standard IELTS format | Identical to regular IELTS |
| Difficulty | Same | Same |
| Fee (Nepal) | NPR 29,500 | ~NPR 33,800 |
| Test Centers | British Council, IDP | Approved SELT centers only |
| Security | Standard ID verification | Video recording, biometric checks |
| UK Visa Acceptance | Not accepted for visa purposes | Accepted for UK visa purposes |
| University Admission | Accepted by most UK universities | Also accepted by all UK universities |
The critical takeaway: if you know you need an IELTS score for your UK visa application, take IELTS for UKVI from the start. IELTS for UKVI scores can be used for both university admission and visa applications, but regular IELTS scores can only be used for university admission (not for the visa).
When Do You Need IELTS for UKVI?
Whether you need IELTS for UKVI depends on your course level and your institution's status:
You MUST Take IELTS for UKVI If:
- You are applying for a pre-sessional English language course
- You are applying to a course below degree level (NQF Level 6)
- Your university or college is not a Student sponsor with track record
- UKVI specifically requires a SELT for your visa type
You May Use Regular IELTS If:
- Your university is a recognized Student sponsor with track record
- You are applying for a degree-level course (NQF Level 6 or above)
- Your university accepts regular IELTS for issuing your CAS
Our advice: if you are unsure, take IELTS for UKVI. It costs only about NPR 4,000 more than regular IELTS, and it covers you for both admission and visa purposes. This small additional cost can save you from the much larger cost of retaking the test if you discover you needed the UKVI version.
IELTS for UKVI Score Requirements
| Course Level | UKVI Minimum (Each Band) | Typical University Requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Below Degree (Foundation, etc.) | 4.0 in each component | 4.5-5.5 overall |
| Pre-Sessional English | 4.0 in each component | Varies: 5.0-6.0 overall |
| Undergraduate Degree | 5.5 in each component | 6.0-6.5 overall |
| Postgraduate Degree | 5.5 in each component | 6.5-7.0 overall |
The UKVI minimum is the immigration requirement for your visa. Your university's requirement for admission is typically higher. You need to meet both requirements: the university's score for admission and the UKVI's score for your visa. For detailed score information, visit our IELTS score requirements guide.
Preparing for IELTS for UKVI
Since the test content is identical to regular IELTS, your preparation approach is the same. Focus on these key areas:
Prepare Exactly as You Would for Regular IELTS
The questions, timing, scoring, and difficulty are identical. Use Cambridge IELTS practice books, British Council practice tests, and our complete IELTS preparation guide. All IELTS preparation materials apply equally to IELTS for UKVI.
Be Aware of the Additional Security Procedures
IELTS for UKVI test centers have additional security: you will be video recorded throughout the test, biometric identity verification may be required, and security checks are more rigorous. This should not affect your test performance, but arrive extra early (at least 45 minutes before) to allow time for these procedures.
Focus on Meeting Component Minimums
For UK visa purposes, you need to meet the minimum score in each individual component (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking), not just the overall band. Many Nepali students achieve a high overall score but fall short in one component, particularly Writing. Practice all 4 skills evenly and aim for consistent scores across all components.
Use the IELTS One Skill Retake Option
If you meet the overall requirement but fall short in 1 component, you can use the IELTS One Skill Retake to retake just that section rather than the entire test. This saves time and money. The One Skill Retake is available for computer-based IELTS for UKVI at participating centers.

LanguageCert International ESOL SELT
