PTE Academic Preparation

Australia (Excellent): Nearly all Australian universities accept PTE Academic, and the Department of Home Affairs recognizes it for visa purposes. If Australia is your primary destination, PTE is the most straightforward test choice.

United Kingdom (Accepted by Many): PTE Academic is recognized as a SELT by UKVI when taken at an approved center -- a significant advantage over Duolingo, which is not SELT-approved.

Canada (Accepted by Many Programs): Canadian universities increasingly accept PTE Academic. However, for immigration purposes, IELTS and CELPIP remain the primary tests referenced by IRCC.

USA (Less Common): PTE acceptance in the USA is less widespread compared to TOEFL and Duolingo. Check your specific university's policy carefully.

1. Master the Computer Interface

Practice with Pearson's official scored practice tests and free practice materials. Familiarize yourself with the timer, text input boxes, audio player, and how tasks transition.

2. Prioritize Microphone Clarity

Your spoken responses are scored by AI. Microphone clarity matters enormously. Speak at a steady, moderate pace. Avoid background noise habits like sighing or saying "um" -- the AI picks up everything. Record yourself and listen back during practice.

3. Understand Integrated Scoring Implications

Because tasks contribute to multiple scores, your preparation must be holistic. A student with excellent reading but poor pronunciation will find their Reading score suffers on Read Aloud tasks.

4. Focus on High-Impact Task Types

Read Aloud, Repeat Sentence, Summarize Written Text, and Write from Dictation are among the highest-impact task types. Focusing on these gives you the best return on your study time.

Weeks 1-2: Diagnostic and Familiarization

Take a full-length scored practice test to establish your baseline score. Familiarize yourself with every PTE task type — there are 20 unique task types across the 3 sections. Practice navigating the computer interface, using the timer, and managing the microphone. Identify your 3 weakest task types and prioritize them going forward.

Weeks 3-4: High-Impact Task Training

Focus on the 4 highest-impact tasks: Read Aloud, Repeat Sentence, Summarize Written Text, and Write from Dictation. These tasks contribute to multiple scores due to integrated scoring. Practice Read Aloud daily — it builds both your Reading and Speaking scores simultaneously. For Repeat Sentence, train your short-term memory by listening to progressively longer sentences and repeating them accurately.

Weeks 5-6: Section-Specific Practice

Speaking & Writing: Record every practice response and listen back. Focus on pronunciation clarity, pace, and microphone technique. Practice the 200-300 word essay with structured paragraphs. Reading: Work on Re-order Paragraphs (one of the hardest task types) and both Fill in the Blanks variants. Listening: Practice with varied accents — PTE uses British, American, and Australian English. Master Write from Dictation, which has a high score contribution.

Weeks 7-8: Mock Tests and Final Preparation

Take 2-3 full-length scored practice tests under exam conditions. Review every incorrect response in detail. Create a personal checklist of recurring errors. In the final 3 days, review your checklist but avoid heavy practice — mental freshness is important. Test day: arrive early, use the bathroom before the test starts (there is no break during the 3-hour session), and maintain consistent microphone distance throughout.

Before the Test

Arrive at the test center 30 minutes early. Bring 2 forms of identification (passport is mandatory). Eat a good meal — there is no food break during the 3-hour session. Use the restroom before checking in. Leave your phone, watch, and all electronics in the secure storage area. You will receive noise-canceling headphones and an erasable notepad.

During Speaking Tasks

Position yourself at a comfortable distance from the microphone — about 4-6 inches. Do not move your head significantly during speaking tasks. Speak at a natural, moderate pace. Do not whisper and do not shout. Avoid filler words ("um," "uh," "like"). If you make a mistake, do not restart — continue smoothly. The AI evaluates overall fluency more than individual errors.

Time Management

PTE has strict time limits for each task. In Speaking & Writing, some tasks have individual timers (Read Aloud gives 30-40 seconds per item). In Reading, manage your 29-30 minutes carefully — do not spend more than 2-3 minutes on any single question. In Listening, tasks play automatically — stay focused from the first second of each audio clip.
