Malaysia Student Visa from Nepal: EMGS Student Pass (2026)

The complete EMGS Student Pass process for Nepali students — documents, fees, processing time, financial proof and arrival steps.

SAStudy Abroad from Nepal Counseling TeamJun 22, 2026Reviewed by Ashish Agrawal

Malaysia's student visa is called the Student Pass, and the good news for Nepali students is that you do not lodge it yourself. Your university applies on your behalf through Education Malaysia Global Services (EMGS), the government agency that screens and processes every international student application. This makes the Malaysia route one of the more straightforward visa journeys in Asia — provided your documents are clean and your funds are clear.

This guide walks through the entire EMGS Student Pass process step by step, the documents you need, the fees, the processing time, and the financial proof — all from a Nepali student's perspective. For the full picture of life and study, start with our study in Malaysia overview, and for budgeting see our cost of studying in Malaysia guide.

What Is the EMGS Student Pass?

The Student Pass is the official permission that lets an international student stay in Malaysia to study. It is tied to your specific course and institution, and it is renewed annually until you graduate. Before the pass is endorsed in your passport, EMGS issues a Visa Approval Letter (VAL) — an in-principle approval that lets you apply for your entry visa and travel to Malaysia.

As a Nepali passport holder, you also need a Single Entry Visa (SEV) to enter the country, which you apply for online once your VAL is issued. You cannot submit an EMGS application directly — your institution does it for you through the EMGS/STARS portal once you hold an offer and have paid the required deposit.

Step-by-Step Student Pass Process

  1. Secure your Letter of Offer. Apply to and receive an unconditional admission offer from an EMGS-registered Malaysian institution, then pay the required tuition deposit.
  2. Institution lodges the EMGS application. Your university submits your Student Pass application to EMGS through the online STARS portal on your behalf — students cannot file it themselves.
  3. Academic & document screening. EMGS verifies your academic documents and issues the “Approval to Study” letter to eligible applicants.
  4. Immigration review & eVAL. EMGS forwards your file to the Immigration Department for the Visa Approval Letter; you receive your eVAL (electronic VAL) once approved in principle.
  5. Apply for the Single Entry Visa (SEV). With your eVAL, apply through Malaysia's official eVISA portal before travelling — required for Nepali passport holders.
  6. Travel to Malaysia. Fly in within your visa validity and meet your institution's international office.
  7. Post-arrival medical examination. Complete the compulsory medical check within 7 days of arrival at an EMGS-panel clinic.
  8. Student Pass endorsement. After you pass the medical, your institution submits your passport to the nearest Immigration Office to have the Student Pass sticker endorsed; it is renewed annually thereafter.

You can read the official requirements on the EMGS guidelines page and the Malaysian Immigration Department Student Pass page.

Documents You Need

Your institution will give you an exact checklist, but Nepali students almost always need the following. Get certified English translations of any document not already in English.

  • Valid passport with at least 12-18 months validity and enough blank pages
  • Passport-size photos with a white background (EMGS has strict photo specifications)
  • Letter of Offer from your Malaysian institution
  • Academic transcripts and certificates (SEE/SLC, +2, bachelor's as applicable)
  • English proficiency evidence (IELTS/TOEFL/PTE) where required
  • Financial proof — usually the latest 3-month bank statements, a sponsor letter, or a scholarship award letter
  • Health declaration / pre-arrival medical screening form
  • No Objection Certificate (NOC) from Nepal's Ministry of Education for the foreign-study process

Use our document checklist and NOC guide for Nepali students to prepare each item correctly the first time.

Fees & Processing Time

ItemCost (RM)Approx. NPR
EMGS + immigration (first year, bundled)RM 3,200 - 4,950approx. NPR 99,000 - 1.5 Lakh
Annual renewal (per year)RM 930 - 1,000approx. NPR 29,000 - 31,000
Student Pass sticker (per year)RM 60approx. NPR 1,900
Single Entry Visa (eVISA)Small additional feeConfirm on eVISA portal

The full process usually takes 4-6 weeks, and in some cases up to 8 weeks. Apply early — peak intakes (around the September and February starts) get busy. Verify the exact charges for your nationality on the official EMGS application fee calculator.

Financial Proof Requirements

EMGS does not publish one fixed amount for every nationality, but you must clearly show you can cover your tuition plus living costs. In practice, prepare evidence of one year of tuition plus roughly RM 18,000-30,000 (approx. NPR 5.6-9.3 Lakh) in living funds.

  • Latest 3-month bank statements in your name or your sponsor's name
  • An official sponsor letter if a parent or relative is funding you
  • A scholarship or sponsorship award letter, if applicable
  • Clear, traceable source of funds — avoid sudden large unexplained deposits

For Nepal-specific paperwork — bank balance certificates, source-of-funds, and NRB rules — see our financial documents guide. If you are funding studies with a loan, our education loan guide explains how to present it.

After You Arrive

Two things matter most in your first week: the post-arrival medical examination within 7 days at an EMGS-panel clinic, and submitting your passport to your institution for Student Pass endorsement. Your university coordinates both. Once endorsed, your Student Pass is valid for the year and renewed before each expiry.
