Japanese language schools dominate the study-in-Japan pathway for Nepali students, with 33,697 out of 34,731 NOCs issued for language programs in FY 2080/81. However, Japan also offers excellent university programs, vocational training (Senmon Gakko), and English-taught degree courses at top-ranked institutions.

This guide covers all institution types, helping you decide whether a language school, university, or vocational program is the best fit for your goals and budget.

Japanese Language Schools

Language schools are the primary entry point for Nepali students in Japan. These schools teach Japanese from beginner to advanced levels over 6 months to 2 years.

What Language Schools Offer

  • Intensive Japanese language instruction from N5 to N2/N1 level
  • Tuition: ¥600,000 - ¥900,000/year (NPR 5,60,000 - 8,40,000)
  • Courses structured around 4 intake periods: January, April, July, October
  • Many offer dormitory housing at subsidized rates
  • Part-time job placement assistance
  • University entrance exam preparation for those planning to continue

How to Choose a Good Language School

Not all language schools are equal. Here is what to evaluate:

  1. Visa approval rate. Choose schools with rates above 90%. Schools with low approval rates may have issues with immigration.
  2. Recognition. Ensure the school is recognized by the Association for the Promotion of Japanese Language Education.
  3. Location. Tokyo schools have more job opportunities but higher living costs. Regional cities like Fukuoka, Osaka, and Sapporo offer better affordability.
  4. Dormitory availability. Schools with dormitories save you the hassle and cost of finding housing independently.
  5. Post-completion support. Some schools help with university placement or job hunting after you complete the language program.

Top National Universities

Japan's national universities offer the best value with standardized tuition of ¥535,800/year and high academic quality. Many have English-taught programs and actively recruit international students.

Vocational Schools (Senmon Gakko)

Vocational schools offer practical, career-focused training in fields like IT, hospitality, automobile technology, healthcare, and design. Programs typically last 2 years and cost ¥600,000-1,200,000/year. Graduates can apply for the Specified Skilled Worker (SSW) visa to work in Japan.

Senmon Gakko programs require at least JLPT N2 for admission. Most Nepali students complete a language school first, then transition to a vocational school.

English-Taught Programs

Several Japanese universities offer degree programs taught entirely in English, eliminating the Japanese language barrier for admission. These include programs at the University of Tokyo (PEAK program), Kyoto University (ILAS), Waseda University, and Sophia University among others.

For English-taught programs, you typically need IELTS 6.0-6.5 or equivalent TOEFL scores instead of JLPT. However, learning Japanese after arrival will significantly improve your daily life, part-time work opportunities, and post-study career prospects.

Pathway: Language School to University

The most common route for Nepali students is: language school first, then university or vocational school. Here is a typical timeline:

  1. Year 1-2: Japanese language school — reach JLPT N2 or higher
  2. Preparation: Take the EJU (Examination for Japanese University Admission) and university entrance exams
  3. Year 3+: Begin your degree or vocational program

This pathway gives you strong Japanese skills, which dramatically improves your part-time work options and post-graduation employment prospects.

Popular Programs for Nepali Students

  1. Japanese language programs — the overwhelming majority of Nepali students
  2. Engineering — mechanical, electrical, civil at national universities
  3. Management and business studies
  4. Vocational/technical programs — IT, automobile, hospitality
