The Philippines offers Nepali students a US-style medical education in English, at a cost far below Western countries. There is one structural difference you must understand from the start: the Philippines does not run a single six-year “MBBS”. Instead you first complete a pre-medical Bachelor of Science (BS) degree, then sit the National Medical Admission Test (NMAT), and only then enter the four-year Doctor of Medicine (MD)— the international equivalent of MBBS.
Before committing, confirm two things: that the university teaches in English to international students, and that the specific college is recognised by the Nepal Medical Council so your degree can be registered when you return. This guide covers the BS-plus-MD structure, NMAT, cost, and the verification steps, building on our MBBS abroad overview.
Recognition Comes First
A Philippine MD is only useful in Nepal if the Nepal Medical Council (nmc.org.np) recognises the college and you later pass the licensing examination. Confirm recognition in writing before paying any fee. Read our full Nepal Medical Council licensing and recognition guide before you enrol.
Why Nepali Students Choose the Philippines for MD / MBBS
- Genuinely English-medium teaching — English is an official language of instruction throughout, so the language barrier is small.
- US-style MD curriculum that some students later use as a foundation for international licensing exams.
- Moderate tuition and living costs compared with Western destinations or a private seat in Nepal.
- Universities regulated by the Commission on Higher Education and listed in global directories such as the World Directory of Medical Schools.
- A warm climate and an established international student community.
The trade-off is the longer, two-stage pathway. If a shorter single-degree route suits you better, compare our MBBS in Russia guide and MD in Georgia guide.
Eligibility for Nepali Students
- NEB +2 Science (or equivalent) with Physics, Chemistry, and Biology to begin the BS pre-medical program.
- A minimum aggregate commonly around 50% (or 2.4 GPA) in PCB; competitive universities may ask for higher.
- NMAT — you must pass the National Medical Admission Test after the BS to enter the four-year MD.
- Qualifying the MECEE-BL and obtaining the NOC from Nepal's Medical Education Commission, as required for Nepali students going abroad for a self-financed medical degree.
Nepal's requirements apply here as elsewhere. You will generally need to qualify the Medical Education Common Entrance Examination – Bachelor Level and obtain a No Objection Certificate through the Medical Education Commission (mec.gov.np). See our NOC process guide for the steps.
Course Structure: BS Pre-Med, NMAT, then MD
The Philippine pathway has three clear stages, usually taking around five and a half to six years in total:
- BS pre-medical degree (commonly about 1.5 to 2 years for international students in a focused track) covering the science foundation required for medical study.
- NMAT — the National Medical Admission Test, the common entrance test you must pass to be admitted to the MD program.
- Four-year Doctor of Medicine (MD), including pre-clinical years, clinical clerkship, and a final internship year.
The MD is internationally treated as equivalent to MBBS. Because the structure differs from the single six-year MBBS offered elsewhere, confirm with both the university and the Nepal Medical Council how the BS-plus-MD pathway is assessed for recognition and licensing.
Cost of MD / MBBS in the Philippines for Nepali Students
The figures below are approximate ranges for guidance only and cover the combined BS-plus-MD pathway. Actual fees vary by university and intake year, exchange rates fluctuate, and living costs are separate. Confirm exact, current fees in writing with each university. | Item | Approximate range |

Choosing a University in the Philippines the Safe Way
Use this verification checklist before you apply:
- Confirm Nepal Medical Council recognition of that specific university in writing.
- Confirm the university is recognised by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), the Philippine regulator, via ched.gov.ph.
- Check the university appears in the World Directory of Medical Schools via wdoms.org.
- Clarify the BS-plus-MD timeline and NMAT requirement in writing, including how long the pre-med stage takes for you.
- Ask for a full fee schedule covering both the BS and MD stages, plus hostel and any extra charges.
We deliberately avoid publishing a “top colleges” ranking, because the right university depends on recognition status, budget, and city — and recognition lists change. Our counselors help you shortlist verified, recognised options during a free session.
After Graduation: Returning to Practise in Nepal
A Philippine MD does not automatically allow you to practise in Nepal. On return, you must complete the equivalence and registration steps and pass the Nepal Medical Council Licensing Examination (NMCLE). Keep your BS transcript, MD transcript, degree, and internship records organised throughout the program. Our Nepal Medical Council licensing guide explains the full sequence.
