Japan is the #1 study abroad destination for Nepali students, with 34,731 NOCs issued in FY 2080/81 -- more than double the count of second-place Canada. One of the reasons for Japan's popularity is the availability of generous scholarships. The MEXT (Monbukagakusho) Scholarship is one of the most comprehensive fully-funded scholarships in the world, covering full tuition, a monthly living allowance, and round-trip airfare. Beyond MEXT, many Japanese universities offer tuition waivers and fee reductions for international students.
This guide covers every major scholarship opportunity for Nepali students in Japan. For the detailed MEXT application process, see our dedicated MEXT Scholarship guide. For the broader picture, visit our complete guide to studying in Japan from Nepal.

JASSO (Japan Student Services Organization) Scholarships
JASSO offers the Monbukagakusho Honors Scholarship for Privately-Financed International Students. This is for students already enrolled in Japanese institutions who are not receiving MEXT.
- Monthly stipend: JPY 48,000 (approximately NPR 45,000/month)
- Duration: 1 year (renewable based on academic performance)
- Eligibility: Must maintain good academic standing and not receive other government scholarships
- Application: Through your Japanese university after enrollment -- not applied for from Nepal
University Tuition Waivers
Japanese national and public universities offer tuition fee exemptions (gakuhi menjo) to international students based on academic merit and financial need. This is separate from MEXT and can be combined with JASSO.
- National universities: Can waive 30%, 50%, or 100% of tuition (JPY 535,800/year). At full waiver, you study at a top Japanese university for free.
- Public universities: Similar waiver programs, typically 30-50% tuition reduction
- Private universities: Many offer 30-50% tuition reduction for academically strong international students
Pro tip: The tuition waiver application is submitted after enrollment. Maintaining a strong GPA (3.0+) significantly increases your chances of receiving and renewing the waiver.
Private Foundation Scholarships
Japan has numerous private foundations that offer scholarships to international students. These are typically smaller amounts (JPY 30,000-100,000/month) but are less competitive than MEXT:
- Rotary Yoneyama Memorial Foundation: JPY 100,000-140,000/month
- Honjo International Scholarship Foundation: JPY 150,000-200,000/month for graduate students
- Otsuka Toshimi Scholarship Foundation: JPY 100,000/month
- Various regional and corporate foundations: Applied for through your university after arrival in Japan
