Study in UAE

The UAE — and Dubai in particular — has become a fast-growing study hub just a four-hour flight from Kathmandu. Global universities like the University of Wollongong, Heriot-Watt, Birmingham and Middlesex run full branch campuses in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, awarding the same degree as their UK and Australian home campuses and teaching entirely in English. With a university-sponsored student visa (no embassy interview), tax-free part-time work, and a large, welcoming South Asian community, the UAE is an increasingly practical choice for Nepali students who want a Western degree closer to home.

Why Study in UAE

Top Reasons to Choose UAE

Just a 4-Hour Flight from Nepal

Direct Kathmandu-Dubai flights take roughly four hours, with only a 15-minute time difference. That means cheaper, shorter trips home, easier family visits, and a far smaller culture shock than moving to Europe, North America or Australia.

Western Degrees Without Western Prices

Most UAE campuses are branches of UK and Australian universities. You earn the exact same degree certificate as the home campus — University of Wollongong, Heriot-Watt, Birmingham, Middlesex — but tuition is typically 30-40% lower than studying in the home country.

English-Taught, No Visa Interview

Almost all programs are delivered in English, so there is no new language to learn. The student residence visa is sponsored and processed by your university — there is no embassy interview, which removes one of the biggest sources of stress for Nepali applicants.

Tax-Free Earnings & Strong Job Market

Students can apply for a part-time work permit (up to 20 hours/week) through MOHRE, and all salaries in the UAE are tax-free. Dubai and Abu Dhabi are global hubs for finance, logistics, tech, hospitality and engineering, with strong graduate hiring.

Generous Merit Scholarships

Branch campuses compete for strong students and offer merit scholarships that commonly cut tuition by 10-50%. Abu Dhabi institutions like NYU Abu Dhabi even offer need-based aid covering the full cost for outstanding admitted students.

Safe, Multicultural and Familiar

The UAE is home to more than 200 nationalities and a very large South Asian community, including thousands of Nepalis. It is one of the safest countries in the world, with Halal food everywhere, mosques and temples, and an easy lifestyle for first-time students abroad.

Visa Process

University-Sponsored Student Visa Process

1

Secure an unconditional offer letter from a UAE-licensed university or international branch campus in Dubai or Abu Dhabi

2

Pay the tuition deposit so the university can act as your visa sponsor and open the entry-permit application

3

Submit your passport copy, photos, attested academic transcripts and proof of funds to the university's admissions or student-visa office

4

Receive the entry permit (e-visa) issued by the university and travel to the UAE

5

Complete the mandatory medical fitness test (blood test and chest X-ray) at a government-approved health centre after arrival

6

Apply for your Emirates ID and give biometrics; the residence visa is then stamped into your passport

7

Stay fully enrolled and maintain good academic standing — the university renews the residence visa each year while you study

Estimated Cost

AED 3,000 - 6,000 for medical, Emirates ID and visa stamping (approx. NPR 1.1 - 2.2 Lakh) — many universities bundle this into their fees

Processing Time

Work Rights

Work Rights in UAE

During Studies

Students on a UAE residence visa can apply for a part-time work permit through the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE) and generally work up to 20 hours per week during term, and full-time during holidays. Free-zone academic clusters such as Dubai International Academic City and Dubai Knowledge Park also host internships with local employers. Crucially, all salaries in the UAE are tax-free, so what you earn is what you keep.

After Graduation

Graduates do not need an employer to stay on. You can take a Job Seeker Visa (60, 90 or 120 days) to hunt for work, or a 5-year Green Visa for skilled professionals earning around AED 15,000+/month. Outstanding graduates from accredited UAE universities — typically with a GPA around 3.75/4.0 or higher — can apply for the 10-year self-sponsored Golden Visa through the Federal Authority for Identity and Citizenship (ICP). Dubai and Abu Dhabi offer strong roles in finance, tech, logistics, hospitality and engineering.

Post-Study Visa

Job Seeker Visa (up to 120 days), 5-year Green Visa, or 10-year Golden Visa for distinguished graduates.

Before applying to universities in UAE, you will need to demonstrate English proficiency. Most universities in UAE accept multiple test formats. Review the English proficiency tests for study abroad to compare IELTS, PTE, Duolingo, and TOEFL side by side, including country-specific IELTS score requirements.

Your application will also require a strong Statement of Purpose. Our SOP writing guide for Nepali students includes UAE-specific tips and the exact structure admissions committees expect.
