One of the biggest advantages of studying in Australia is the right to work while you study. For most Nepali students, part-time work income covers a significant portion of living expenses — and in some cases, it covers nearly all of them.

But the rules around student work rights have changed recently, and working outside those rules can have serious consequences, including visa cancellation. This guide gives you the current regulations, practical job-finding advice, and the financial reality of working part-time as a student in Australia.

Current Work Hour Limits (2026)

Nepali students on Subclass 500 visas can work 48 hours per fortnight during study periods and unlimited hours during breaks. This replaced the previous 40-hour fortnightly limit. In practice, this means you average 24 hours per week, with flexibility to work more in one week and less in the next.

During scheduled course breaks: You can work unlimited hours. This includes semester breaks, inter-trimester breaks, and any official breaks listed on your Confirmation of Enrolment.

Important restrictions:

  • You cannot start working until your course has officially commenced.
  • The 48-hour fortnightly limit is strictly enforced. The Department of Home Affairs can access your employment records through tax data.
  • Volunteer work counts toward your work hours if it would normally be paid work.

How Much Can You Earn?

Nepali students earn AUD 20,000-28,000 per year working part-time at Australia's AUD 23.23/hour minimum wage. Casual jobs in aged care and warehousing pay AUD 25-35/hour with penalty rates for weekends, evenings, and public holidays.

Work ScheduleEst. Fortnightly EarningsEst. Monthly Earnings
20 hours/fortnight (light)AUD 465AUD 930
36 hours/fortnight (moderate)AUD 836AUD 1,672
48 hours/fortnight (maximum)AUD 1,115AUD 2,230

During course breaks (working full-time at 38 hours/week): earnings reach AUD 3,530 per month or more. Working the maximum during term and full-time during breaks yields AUD 20,000-28,000 per year. That covers a large portion of your living costs in Australia.

Getting Your Tax File Number (TFN)

You must apply for a free TFN through the ATO website within your first week in Australia — without it, employers withhold tax at 47% instead of the standard student rate. The TFN is similar to Nepal's PAN and arrives within 28 days.

  1. You must be in Australia and your student visa must be active.
  2. Apply online through the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) website — it is free.
  3. You will need your passport, visa details, and Australian address.
  4. The TFN is usually issued within 28 days by mail.

Why it matters: Without a TFN, your employer is legally required to withhold tax at the highest marginal rate (47%). With a TFN and proper tax declaration, most students pay significantly less tax — and many receive a tax refund when they file their annual return. Apply for your TFN as soon as you arrive.

Common Jobs for Nepali Students

Nepali students in Australia work across 6 main job categories, with hospitality and aged care offering the highest pay rates and most flexible scheduling.

  • Retail: Supermarkets (Woolworths, Coles, Aldi), clothing stores, convenience stores. Pay is typically at or slightly above minimum wage, with penalty rates on weekends.
  • Hospitality: Restaurants, cafes, fast food chains, and bars. The Nepali restaurant scene in Australian cities is growing, and many Nepali students find their first job through community connections.
  • Warehouse and logistics: Picking, packing, and dispatch work. These roles often pay AUD 25-30 per hour and are available through agencies.
  • Campus jobs: Library assistance, IT support, event management, and tutoring. Convenient and employers understand your study schedule.
  • Cleaning: Commercial and residential cleaning jobs are widely available and often pay above minimum wage.
  • Aged care and disability support: Support worker roles pay AUD 28-35 per hour on weekends. Particularly relevant if you are studying nursing or health sciences.

Tips for Finding Work

Start your job search within the first 2 weeks of arriving in Australia using these proven channels popular among Nepali students.

  • Start early. Begin your job search in the first two weeks of your course.
  • Use multiple channels. Seek, Indeed, Jooble, Gumtree, university career portals, and Nepali community Facebook groups.
  • Get an RSA certificate. If you want to work in hospitality serving alcohol, you need a Responsible Service of Alcohol certificate (AUD 40-100, completed online).
  • Build an Australian-style resume. Concise (1-2 pages), include your Australian address and phone number.

What You Cannot Do

These 4 work violations result in visa cancellation for Nepali students on Subclass 500 visas in Australia:

  • Do not work before your course starts. Even if your visa is active, you must wait for your official course commencement date.
  • Do not exceed 48 hours per fortnight during term. This is the most common work-related visa violation among international students.
  • Do not work for cash without declaring it. "Cash-in-hand" work is a tax violation and can also be a visa violation.
  • Do not let work compromise your studies. Your primary visa condition is that you remain enrolled and maintain satisfactory course progress.

After Graduation: Work Rights Under the 485 Visa

The Subclass 485 visa grants Nepali graduates 2-6 years of unrestricted full-time work rights in Australia after graduation, with no hour limits and no employer sponsorship required. See the full Subclass 485 guide for duration details by qualification level and regional study bonuses.
