Pathway and Foundation Programs in Australia for Nepali Students

Complete guide to foundation years and diploma pathways — alternative entry routes into Australian universities for students who do not meet direct entry requirements.

Not every Nepali student qualifies for direct entry into an Australian university. If your GPA is slightly below the requirement, your English score does not quite meet the threshold, or your +2 curriculum does not align with Australian entry standards, that does not mean Australia is off the table. It means you may need to take one additional step first.

Pathway and foundation programs are specifically designed to bridge the gap between your current qualifications and the entry requirements of Australian universities. Thousands of international students — including Nepali students — use these programs every year. They are a legitimate, well-established route into some of Australia's best institutions.

Types of Pathway Programs

Australia offers 2 pathway types: foundation years (entry to Year 1) and diploma pathways (entry to Year 2), both costing AUD 20,000-32,000 and accepting Nepali students with IELTS 5.0-6.0.

Foundation Year Programs

A foundation year is a one-year preparatory programthat prepares you for entry into the first year of a bachelor's degree. It is designed for students who have completed their secondary education (such as +2 in Nepal) but do not meet direct entry requirements.

  • Duration: Typically 8-12 months (some offer accelerated or extended options)
  • Subjects: Combination of English, mathematics, and discipline-specific subjects related to your intended degree
  • Completion: Successful completion with the required GPA guarantees entry into Year 1 of your bachelor's degree
  • Entry requirements: Generally IELTS 5.0-5.5 and moderate high school grades

Diploma Pathway Programs

A diploma pathway is a 8-12 month program equivalent to the first year of a bachelor's degree. Instead of starting at Year 1, you complete the diploma and then enter directly into Year 2of the bachelor's program.

  • Duration: 8-12 months (two or three trimesters)
  • Credit transfer: Upon completion, you receive credit for the first year and enter Year 2 directly
  • Net time saved: Compared to a foundation year, you save 1 full year
  • Entry requirements: IELTS 5.5-6.0 and reasonable high school grades
PathwayTotal Time to Bachelor'sEntry into Degree
Foundation Year4 years (1 yr foundation + 3 yr degree)Year 1
Diploma Pathway3 years (1 yr diploma + 2 yr remaining)Year 2
Direct Entry3 yearsYear 1

For most Nepali students who do not qualify for direct entry, the diploma pathway is the better option if you can meet its entry requirements, because it does not add time to your overall study plan.

Who Needs a Pathway Program?

Nepali students with +2 percentages below 65-70% or IELTS scores of 5.0-5.5 benefit most from pathway programs as an alternative entry route into Australian universities.

  • Lower GPA. If your +2 percentage or bachelor's GPA is below the university's direct entry threshold. Many universities require a +2 percentage of 65-70% or higher for direct entry.
  • English score slightly below requirement. If your IELTS score is 5.0-5.5 instead of the 6.0-6.5 required for direct entry, a foundation program accepts lower English scores.
  • Different education system alignment. Nepal's +2 curriculum does not always align directly with Australian Year 12 prerequisite subjects.
  • Career changers. If you completed a bachelor's in one field in Nepal and want to study a different field in Australia.

Packaged Offers: One Visa for Pathway + Degree

A packaged offer combines your pathway and degree into a single Subclass 500 visa application, strengthening your GS statement with a coherent long-term study plan. The pathway provider and the university issue a combined offer.

  • You apply for a single student visa covering both the pathway and the degree
  • Your Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) reflects the full study plan
  • Your Genuine Student statement can present a coherent, long-term study plan
  • Your financial evidence can be structured around the full program

We strongly recommend applying for a packaged offer rather than applying for the pathway and degree separately.

Cost of Pathway Programs

Pathway programs cost AUD 20,000-32,000 for Nepali students (NPR 17-27 lakhs), added to the remaining degree costs for total investment planning.

Program TypeAnnual Tuition (AUD)Approximate NPR
Foundation YearAUD 20,000-30,000NPR 17-26 lakhs
Diploma PathwayAUD 22,000-32,000NPR 19-27 lakhs

When budgeting, add the pathway cost to your remaining degree costs. Choosing an affordable university combined with a diploma pathway can keep the total investment manageable. For full cost details, see our Australia cost guide.

Popular Pathway Providers

Navitas, Study Group, INTO, and university-run programs are the 4 main pathway providers connecting Nepali students to Australian university degrees.

  • Navitas — Operates pathway colleges on or near campuses of partner universities including Deakin, Griffith, La Trobe, Curtin, and Western Sydney. Smaller class sizes and extra academic support.
  • Study Group — Runs foundation and diploma programs for partner universities including the University of Sydney (through Taylor's College), Charles Sturt University, James Cook University, and Flinders University.
  • INTO — Offers both foundation and diploma options with strong English language support, helpful for Nepali students building academic English skills.
  • University-run programs — Some universities operate their own pathway programs: University of Melbourne (Trinity College Foundation), ANU College, and UNSW Global. These may have smoother credit transfer processes.

Pathway Programs and the 485 Visa

Your bachelor's degree (not the pathway) qualifies you for the 485 post-study work visa, provided total CRICOS-registered study is at least 92 weeks. The pathway program itself does not count toward the 2-year study requirement for the 485 visa. However, your bachelor's degree (which is 3 years even with a diploma pathway entry into Year 2) does countbecause the 485 visa looks at the final qualification and the total CRICOS-registered study. In other words, if you complete a diploma pathway and then finish a bachelor's degree in 2 more years, your bachelor's degree still qualifies you for the 485 visa — provided the total enrolled study was at least 2 academic years (92 weeks).

How to Apply for a Pathway Program

Nepali students follow a 5-step process starting from their target university and working backward to the right pathway provider.

  1. Choose your target university and degree. Work backward from where you want to end up.
  2. Identify the pathway program that feeds into that university and degree.
  3. Apply to the pathway provider with your +2 transcripts, English test scores, and passport copy.
  4. Request a packaged offer for both the pathway and the degree.
  5. Receive your combined CoE and proceed with your student visa application.

Processing is generally faster than direct university applications, and conditional offers (pending English test results) are common.

Is a Pathway Program Right for You?

Choose a pathway only if your GPA or English score falls below direct entry thresholds — otherwise, apply directly to save time and cost. A pathway leads to the same degree, from the same Australian university, with the same qualification. Employers and immigration officers do not differentiate between graduates who entered directly and those who came through a pathway.
